Part of me wonders if the skies of Mars wouldn't slowly drive human's insane. The year before we left Seattle was the first of the major wildfires that have plagued the PNW of recent years. And for days we had this yellowish haze hanging over the city, making it feel positively post-apocalyptic. You could just feel the "wrongness" of it getting under your sky, that color always sitting there reminding you all was not right with the world. I loathed that feeling.

I learned as a child to be aware of a yellowish sky in the Midwest because it meant a tornado was nearby. And now as a Californian, I have that same sense of foreboding when the light and sky changes and you know, even before the ashes fall, that there's a wildfire approaching. Mars would require retiring my brain!

I wonder if the Mars blue sky conspiracy theory is contributing to Elon Musk's desire to colonize Mars...

My "there" was an America where I would be allowed/able to work, to have a job. Never reached it. I believed, incorrectly, that the US was a country of immigrants. All working hard to make it an even better place. Now my "there" is my home country with my mom waiting for me with a pot of tea while the light slowly turns into a many colored evening sky. But that there is gone and I cry for it almost every day.

So fascinating as always. Bright blue skies do lift my spirits. The Martian skies look a lot like ours when they are filled with dust or smoke - which would be unhealthy for us. Adjusting what is and isn’t healthy would be a monumental job I think!

"Colour is a powerful catalyst for the human imagination." Everything about this post -- and the Soling reading in Threadable -- is that thought in action. I don't think I ever thought about colors that way before now.

Love this--and how much we are shaped by the expectations of what is familiar. Beautiful example and fascinating too.
