Hello Mike from Athens, Greece! This whole twin city story brought Jerusalem to my mind. Passing the border there is still very hard due to political, religious and cultural reasons. It already is on my Goodreads to-read list.
Just got the China Miellville book. I know this will make you snore but the movie Upside Down with Kirstin Dunst is a magical dystopia with mirror cities that is incredibly beautiful. I might just watch it again now that you reminded me. I really appreciate artfully-done visual effects paired with unusual storylines.
I am very surprised you were bored in east yorkshire with the seaside and city of hull with all its museums theatres cinemas and other attractions. I never had a dull moment in the 20 years.I spent there
I joined the scouts which kept me very busy. I only left to go to university and sadly found the only jobs for me were down south.
Still you seem to have made up for such a disappointing upbringing
Ha! It was only the disappointment that so many folk reserves for the place they spent their teenage years in! Objectively, I like East Yorkshire about as much as everywhere else, and I always enjoy going back for a visit to see what's changed (although I wish the trains were still running and Dr Beeching hadn't swung his axe with quite that much gusto).
But subjectively, after never finding a job better than making mug handles at Hornsea Pottery, I was very glad indeed to head away to York to become a student...
