Dagnabbit I've been meaning to include that Australian clip in Six Things FOR MONTHS, but now if I do it you'll accuse me of nicking your stuff and set your goons on me and I'll end up a pariah. And we wouldn't want that, would we?
More scientists like Louis Slotin should have their stories told. A Canadian scientist who bore the full dosage of radiation when 2 halves of a berylium ( ? ) sphere came into contact. Apparently safety wasn't an overriding CONCERN during the Manhattan Project. I've done a small amount of research into the situation.
Mike, if you need a hand getting any content out, or if I can help in another way, feel free to reach out. You've become a part of this weird extended family for me here, so I'm here if you need it! Those headaches sound brutal and super duper annoying.
Side note: Illusions have fascinated me since I was a kid.
So glad you've found the source of your headaches -- here's to clear, pain-free thinking in the future! The illusions in this newsletter, though - *image of brain exploding*
I just loved this. It's insanity--and like you say, that's what makes us wonder what other tomfoolery our brains are convincing us of when it comes to what's real.
But also--I'm so sorry you've been having chronic migraines, it's the worst. Fingers crossed that it continues to not bother you any longer. 💜
I’m so glad you’ve found relief! I have a tendency to high blood pressure (also inexplicable but seems to be linked to the condition that almost killed me in pregnancy, HELLP Syndrome, after which I was warned high blood pressure might be a problem going forward), but so far no headaches. However, most everyone in my family has a tendency to migraines and a younger one is has been suffering unexplained headaches so I’m going to suggest a blood pressure check.
Really glad you’ve found some treatment for this. It’s awful when a medical problem makes doing our work difficult.
This is great, thanks for sharing! I look forward to sharing the optical illusions with my three kiddos. We started homeschooling young, so my kids thought science was just figuring out cool stuff about how the world works - now that they're old enough to realize it's nerdy, they don't mind 🤣 I'm sorry about your headaches, and so glad you found a solution! It's wild how crippling something so innocuous-sounding can be 🙄

What the f—?? That’s wild. The brain is an amazing place. Mush of it still undiscovered.
BTW meant to mention that I’m glad you found relief from headaches. They’re no fun.
Wow! The high blood pressure thing is scary—so glad you resolved it!
a) Sorry about the headaches, 2) I'm glad you're better now, and gamma (I guess)) look up videos by Richard Wiseman, and thank me later.

So glad you figured out those headaches! The connection you found makes me wonder about my headaches.
Whoa. Mind boggled.

So sorry about your medical woes, Mike. I'm relieved that things are looking up. And what a great journey you take us on in this edition. Loved it.
I got excited at the gravity hill because I just wrote it into a script but I hadn’t heard of the Ames window. What a trip!
So glad your head feels better - welcome to the ‘completely random high blood pressure’ club. The drugs are good, but not in a fun way.
Excellent 😎
