All that water - that must be where all the dolphins will go ! HHGTG / Douglas Adams reference...

Ha! Nope - as everyone currently working in astrobiology knows, the dolphins will be sticking around until we can genetically enhance and then Uplift them! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Startide_Rising #LessonsFrom80sSciFi

I got half way through reading this and realised I need to reread it at the weekend as there's SO MUCH gold to take in properly! Thank you Mike, I shall be back with a contemplative brain to get more from it

You're always so kind - thank you, Mark! Yes, this is an especially chewy one - it seems back in 2023 I was a bit over-besotted with hyperlinking....

Hey Mike! Thanks for the shout, and just when I'm getting back into writing! Very kind. Fantastic article!

Hooray! A pleasure, and I'm so glad to hear that. :)

I think Phil Plait did write about extraterrestrial water within the last month. I have a paid subscription so I get three newsletters a week from him.

Incidentally, about a year and a bit ago, he wrote about the Oort Cloud and mentioned other solar systems should have them. So, the folks with the big instruments and brains went looking and as of last year, have found 73(?)(or 77?) solar systems with their version of Oort Clouds.

His newsletter had a bunch of thumbnails showing a selection of them. Our cloud would be too faint and diffuse to see in our system but from a much greater distance the clouds create a signature which our instruments can detect. It was fascinating.

Ah! Thank you. I'm also a paid subscriber to Phil, but I'm way behind with his newsletters, and this is clearly a sign of it. I will go hunting for those editions and update this piece accordingly - including the Oort cloud update from ages back that I missed as well, ghagh.

He sent me the link. It doesn’t mention the Oort cloud, but instead refers to trans-neptunian objects with those objects being masses of comets. So maybe it’s not technically the Oort Cloud which may be even further out??

I just searched and couldn’t find it so I sent him an email. He’s been pretty good at responding to my emails in the past. I’ll let you know what hear.

Wow this blew my mind. I think I might be 61-62% water due to my condition and the rest definitely has a higher pizza and anxiety ratio.
